Gotas de Oro: A definite good play in wine I first met Alphonse Dotson and Martha Cervantez as I had finalized setting up a small impromptu art show for a wine tasting reception at the Holiday Inn near DFW. The event: Gotas de Oro, a cocktail party with hors d’ourves and wine on Thursday evening, January 28. The stars: Alphonse and Martha, who were showcasing their wine from their own winery in Voca, Texas, “Gotas de Oro”, the attendees, animated and distinguished group of people who were sprinkled with former pro football players, Richard Chanofsky, who orchestrated the event, and last but not least, the artists that showcased their work for the night, Junanne Peck, a member of TxO Original, Buddah Khan, Stephanie Cavanaugh, and yours truly, Lamberto® Alvarez, also representing TxO Original.

Getting back to meeting Alphonse and Martha… we greeted each other and what caught my attention was their sincere broad smile, and their incredible magnetism. Their strong handshakes, hugs and enthusiasm told me right away this was going to be a successful evening, even though it was raining cats and dogs outside. Indeed it was. The reception area where the cocktail, wine tasting, and art show was taking place was filled as soon as it started. And it was filled with laughter, positive signs and approvals of their wine, intrigue over our paintings and art, and a “good feel” all over. Not bad for a rainy night!

What made this wine tasting different for me, is that I am humbly more of a beer drinker, but upon tasting this wine I felt the need to keep coming back for more. Mmmmmhh… unusual for me… but please don’t take the word of an unexperienced neophyte wine drinker, but rather buy it and taste it for yourself. Alphonse and Martha introduced their wine in early fall of 2009, and very quickly it was touted it as a very fine wine. It’s been referred by seasoned wine dinkers as being “bright, clean with plenty of lifting acidity. Others have commented on the scents and flavors as “white flowr, peach, and lemon notes.

The fact that Alphonse and Martha were there at the event to sign bottles of their bottles, was a nice touch. I know that, because I am very fond of collecting history in the signatures of people who come into my life and sign my paintings, especially if they have some notoriety. Alsphonse Dotson as some of you may know, played his years as a pro football player in stints with the Miami Dolphins, Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders. His son, Santana Dotson, who also attended the event, played with Tampa Bay and Green Bay. Others present were Joe King, another former pro football player who did stints with the Raiders, Tampa, Cincinatti and Cleveland. This towering man, who goes by the name Joe Derek King, has taken an interest in country western singing and if you have a chance look up his hit in YouTube entitled “Down in Stillwater Oklahoma”. An incredible promising voice. You are definitely bound to see more of Joe as his pieces fall in place in the music world.

Alphonse and Martha are in a different kind of game now, but they are surely positioned to make some “good plays” with their hard work and love for wine. To contact them write to winesofdotsoncervantes@gmail.com
