As I work late into the night thickening my acrylic paint for my present working project, a series of paintings, I find myself creating “ tiny little worlds” within each positive and negative spaces in my canvas. Little by little I work on each area as if each is a labyrinth of rural life. Hey! That’s a pretty nice little road!…I could sure navigate my little cars through there. Needless to say the moment takes me way back to my childhood days when my curious little mind created those same little worlds…. with mud, leaves, rocks, twigs, and anything that I could find. I was not aware then that I was already delving into the indelible and wonderful world of creativity and art. With my little hands I molded many tiny worlds where life existed.
My mother always received comments from our adult neighbors, admiring the long terms of time I spent alone in that small little world, without the need for attention or company. Now, don’t take me wrong, I also enjoyed lots of physical activities and games with other friends my age, but whenever I entered the solitude of my own fantasy, I would get completely lost in it and would not pay too much mind to the rest of the real world. Hours went by and I never tired.
As a mature artist I now appreciate fully the value of getting lost in our own worlds, seeing beyond the “big picture”. Many times the little details is what really matters most. The ability to become a child is always within our reach and we should always embrace it as often as we can. So, on this snowy week we just experienced, I got my little “carritos”, (little cars) and I played in the snow… then I went back to my paint.
